The essential question I chose was what does hospital volunteer have to do? I chose this question because I will be a hospital volunteer for my senior project. It is important to know the different responsibilities of a volunteer before going in. It is a pre-warning for what to expect and what to know about the kind of jobs I will do. Lilly Little’s article about “How to Volunteer at a Hospitalis very informative. Little is a journalist for How Stuff Works.com. When she wrote her article, she used several reliable sources such as the Center for Disease Control and Children’s Hospitals across the nation. This helps to verify her information is from a reliable source.

Volunteering at a hospital can bring others much-needed hope and happiness.  Volunteering also can give kind encouragement and support to people of all ages. Many volunteers are involved in the inner workings of many hospitals. Some volunteers give as much time as employees. There are many other opportunities to serve, and volunteers eagerly fill those needs. Volunteers can be separated into age groups (like teen, college student, or adult) or by an organization (such as scouting or youth group).  Hospitals offer endless ways to volunteer based on personal time and talents. Volunteers can visit with patients, be present in recovery rooms, greet visitors and patients, or work in the gift shop or cafeteria. They can also work with transportation or in the library. People can also volunteer within a division of the hospital such as oncology (cancer) or hospice (the programs set up for dying patients to be comfortable in their final time). Volunteers go through many screening processes. There is normally a tuberculosis test required. This insures volunteers will not infect a patient while volunteering. Also background checks and health screenings are preformed to protect the patients, staff, and other volunteers at a hospital. This can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. Before beginning, there is some form of training. This can be a one-time general training where the hospital covers a little bit of everything including all of the need to know information, or it can be a really specific narrow training over several days that prepares for the requirements of a specific field. There are many benefits to being a hospital volunteer. If volunteers are young, volunteer work looks good on résumés and on college applications. Also, making someone else smile is very rewarding. If a person is planning on going into a medical career, hospital volunteering is a great place to start. It provides experience for what it is like to work in a hospital. It is also provides hands-on training and provides professional connections. Anyone who volunteers at a hospital will make many lives better (Little).

This article answers my essential question. It tells me in depth about the different responsibilities of a hospital volunteer and how to become a volunteer. It also tells me valuable benefits of hospital volunteering. I learned about how great it is to volunteer at a hospital and what I can hope to get out of it. It also reaffirmed my desire to do volunteering. I was getting frustrated with how long the process to get in was taking, but I feel better about what I will soon be doing and what a difference I will make.
